Marian University gets $24M gift for engineering school

Posted on

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marian University’s plans to open an engineering school have gotten a $24 million boost from a family which owns a company that makes custom, die-cut components for several industries.

The Indianapolis school announced the gift from the Witchger family last week. Officials said the university was now halfway to its $50 million fundraising goal for the engineering school, following more than $1 million that’s been raised from several other donors.

The planned E.S. Witchger School of Engineering will be named for the Witchger family’s patriarch. The family owns and operates Indianapolis-based Marian Inc., which supplies parts for the medical, electronics and automotive industries.

Money raised to date will go toward start-up costs, including facilities and equipment, endowed scholarships, endowed faculty positions, curriculum design and student recruitment, the Indianapolis Business Journal reported.

The university expects the school’s first class will be welcomed in fall 2022. After graduating its first class, the university can seek approval from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

The school’s degrees will concentrate in electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering.

School President Daniel J. Elsener said opening its own engineering school will allow degree completion to be more efficient.

Engineering a battery fast enough to make recharging like refueling

Right now, electric vehicles are limited by the range that their batteries allow. That’s because recharging the vehicles, even under ideal situations, can’t be done as quickly as refueling an internal combustion vehicle. So far, most of the effort on extending the range has been focused on increasing a battery’s capacity. But it could be just as effective to create a battery that can charge much more quickly, making a recharge as fast and simple as filling your tank.

There is no shortage of ideas about how this might be arranged, but a paper published earlier this week in Science suggests an unusual way that it might be accomplished: using a material called black phosphorus, which forms atom-thick sheets with lithium-sized channels in it. On its own, black phosphorus isn’t a great material for batteries, but a Chinese-US team has figured out how to manipulate it so it works much better. Even if black phosphorus doesn’t end up working out as a battery material, the paper provides some insight into the logic and process of developing batteries.

So, what is black phosphorus? The easiest way to understand it is by comparisons to graphite, a material that’s already in use as an electrode for lithium-ion batteries. Graphite is a form of carbon that’s just a large collection of graphene sheets layered on top of each other. Graphene, in turn, is a sheet formed by an enormous molecule composed of carbon atoms bonded to each other, with the carbons arranged in a hexagonal pattern. In the same way, black phosphorus is composed of many layered sheets of an atom-thick material called phosphorene.

But there are key differences between the materials. To begin with, phosphorus is a larger atom with more

Georgia boy, 12, is college sophomore aerospace engineering major

Like many other 12-year-old boys, Caleb Anderson enjoys collecting action figures, watching Netflix and playing with Beyblades. He also happens to be a sophomore in college majoring in aerospace engineering.

Caleb is currently enrolled as a student at Chattahoochee Technical College in Marietta, Georgia, where he’ll graduate with a bachelor’s degree in two years. He hopes to continue his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Massachusetts Institute for Technology and eventually get an internship working for Elon Musk.

“When I was like 1, I always wanted to go to space,” Caleb, who’s favorite subject is math, told USA TODAY. “I figured that aerospace engineering would be the best path.”

Caleb’s mother, Claire, said she first realized her son was gifted when he began mimicking her speech at just 4 weeks old. At 9 months, he could sign more than 250 words in American Sign Language and had no trouble reading words he’d never seen before.

“I was getting my master’s in education so I knew that there was something special about that,” she said.

While enrolled in a traditional middle school, Claire Anderson, 46, said Caleb would breeze through tests without having to study because he already knew most of the material. The former teacher and current stay-at-home mom worried that he wasn’t being challenged enough.

“I didn’t like the character that was building in him,” she said. “He didn’t have any study skills, perseverance, grit. He didn’t ask for help.”

Both Claire and her husband, Kobi, acknowledged that at times his intelligence made it difficult for Caleb to make friends. Kobi Anderson, 45, recalled Caleb getting upset that his friends couldn’t communicate with him when he was just 3
