C.J. Anderson Comes Full Circle Back to Berkeley After NFL Career

Posted on

C.J. Anderson is accustomed to starting at the bottom and working his way to a prominent position. He did it as a running back at Cal, then as an undrafted player who eventually scored a touchdown in a Super Bowl victory.

And now that his seven-year professional playing career is over, the 29-year-old Vallejo native is taking the next step in his football journey as a voluntary coach on Cal’s offensive staff.

Anderson, who retired from the NFL last month, hinted on social media that a coaching assignment was in his immediate future.

Asked by a fan a couple weeks back about becoming an NFL assistant, Anderson wrote on Twitter: “I want to coach a college team 1st. I’ve learned a lot from great players and coaches. I’m excited for my opportunity to grow and get my own program one day. If a NFL team calls about running them I’ll be ready.”

Turns out that first coaching opportunity comes at his alma mater, where in 2011 and ’12 Anderson rushed for 1,135 yards and 12 touchdowns.

“C.J.’s going to join us in a voluntary position, off the field, to support our offense and the football staff as needed,” coach Justin Wilcox told reporters on Tuesday. “He can’t coach the players — there’s rules as to what he can and cannot do. But we’re excited to have him here.”

Bradrick Shaw said on a Sunday call with reporters that Anderson has been part of recent Zoom meetings with the running backs.

Anderson got his start at Jesse M. Bethel High in Vallejo, where he rushed for nearly 4,000 career yards. Mostly overlooked by college recruiters, he attended Laney College for two seasons, where he attained JC all-state honors as a sophomore in 2010 when

Florida vs. Texas A&M score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA highlights, full coverage

Posted on

As expected, No. 4 Florida and No. 21 Texas A&M brought plenty of offense into their meeting Saturday at Kyle Field as the Gators take a 21-17 lead into halftime. The teams combined for just six possessions in the first half, all six resulting in points. Both teams had touchdown drives of 7 minutes or longer, and the only reason there wasn’t more scoring was because both teams appeared to deliberately slow the pace of the game by running the play clock down instead of going no-huddle.

Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond surpassed Jerrod Johnson as the Aggies’ all-time leader in passing yards during a great first half in which Mond completed 16-of-22 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Mond’s favorite target in the half was Caleb Chapman, who matched his career total with six receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Not to be outdone, Florida quarterback Kyle Trask completed 13-of-18 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. His first scoring strike of the game went to tight end Kyle Pitts for Pitts’ seventh touchdown catch of the season.

CBS Sports will be with you the entire way updating this story with the latest from Florida at Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon. Keep it locked here for live updates, highlights and more throughout the game.

Miami QB D’Eriq King has taken full advantage of transfer rules

Posted on

He committed to one school (TCU) way back in 2015, then fashionably de-committed.

He committed to another school (Houston) as it fashionably touted its 2016 recruiting class.

He saw the head coach (Tom Herman) leave after one season, which was pretty fashionable.

He (King) proved fashionably versatile in a sport (among other sports) becoming more position-less.

He played two years for another coach (Major Applewhite), who got fired with fashionable haste.

Come late September 2019, he (King) ventured to the fashion vanguard, accepting his third coach’s advice to follow a new redshirt rule.

Come January 2020, he entered the fashionable transfer portal, announcing it fashionably by tweet during the national championship game.

In winter 2020, he transferred, the foremost fashion.

“Just playing with these guys for the first few weeks and getting a bye week, I think I have a better feel for what guys are good at,” he said this week in Miami’s media sessions. The quotation told of a quick-study necessity that, too, is fashionable.

So start with the transfer and work back.

Transfers grip the game as never before, their stigmas deceased and their pathways ever less cluttered. In the 2019-20 College Football Playoff, three of the four starting quarterbacks had transferred from other major programs, leaving 2021 NFL No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence as the only one of the four as a one-school throwback.

When LSU quarterback Joe Burrow stood in New York in December 2019 to accept the Heisman Trophy, that made it three straight Heisman winners who had transferred from one FBS program to another. Among the 82 Heisman winners before that, only two had transferred from another major school, Cam Newton (2010) and Felix “Doc” Blanchard (1945), the latter switching from North Carolina to Army after he signed up for the Army during

Clemson vs. Virginia score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA highlights, full coverage

Posted on

No. 1 Clemson is letting Virginia hang around and make this Saturday night ACC showcase more interesting than anyone imagined, holding onto a 24-10 lead at halftime in Death Valley.

The Tigers dominated the game early on with defense that prevented Virginia from getting into any kind of rhythm and allowed Travis Etienne (10 carries for 54 rushing yards and a touchdown, two catches for 37 receiving yards) to carry the weight offensively. Trevor Lawrence played well, completing 15 of 23 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, but the offense as a whole was inconsistent with its effort and faced too many third-and-long situations to feel like it ever established an edge against the Virginia defense.

“We didn’t challenge them at the line of scrimmage,” Dabo Swinney told the ACC Network heading into the locker room. “We didn’t play the way we’re capable of playing at the end of the first half. Not doing a good job on first down defensively … offensively, too many miscues. We’ve got to play a lot better.”

Virginia got in a late touchdown to cut the lead to 14, so you can expect it will come out of the locker room with a lot of confidence. It’s been an aggressive showing from the four-touchdown underdogs so far, and there’s no reason to think Bronco Mendenhall has the kind of team that will let up from its effort to come back and shock the world.
