Hamilton won Sunday’s Eifel Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in Germany for his 91st career Formula 1 race victory. It ties him with Schumacher for the most wins of any F1 driver in the 70 years of the world’s most prestigious racing series.

Hamilton started second and ran behind his teammate Valtteri Bottas for the first part of the race. But Bottas locked his front tires up braking into the first corner on lap 11 and Hamilton was able to get past. Hamilton then stayed out front for the rest of the race and was able to stay ahead of Max Verstappen on a restart with 11 laps to go.

Bottas ended up having to retire from the race because of a mechanical problem.

After the race, Schumacher’s son Mick presented Hamilton with a helmet that Schumacher wore while driving for Mercedes. Mick Schumacher is currently first in the Formula 2 points standings and could land a F1 drive in 2021.

Michael Schumacher hasn’t appeared in public since he suffered a brain injury in a skiing accident in 2013. The family has been very private about Schumacher’s condition since his accident.

Hamilton’s win comes in Schumacher’s home country and the home country of his Mercedes racing team. With Bottas failing to score points because of his retirement, Hamilton’s points lead is now 70 points ahead of his teammate in the points standings. For perspective, a driver gets 25 points for winning a race. Bottas could win the next two races while Hamilton finishes outside the top 10 and Hamilton could still have a 20-point lead in the standings.

Oregon Department of Corrections weighs cutting ties with community colleges, moving education in-house

The Oregon Department of Corrections is weighing ending its connections to community colleges across the state and proposing to move its education program in-house because of a budget shortfall.

The DOC currently contracts with six community colleges in Oregon to provide high school diploma equivalency services to inmates across its 14 facilities.

Department of Corrections communications manager Jennifer Black told Oregon Public Broadcasting that DOC is proposing the contracts be phased out and the agency hire back those positions as part of the DOC permanent budget going forward.

She said nearly 1,000 inmates were enrolled in the Adult Basic Skill Development program as of Sept. 30.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, contractors were unable to enter the institutions and ABS (Adult Basic Skills) programming could not be adapted and continued during operation modifications,” she said. “Converting contractor funding to DOC staff positions will allow the department to continue ABS programming during other disasters or operational restrictions.”

DOC director Colette Peters sent a letter about the situation this week to Cam Preus, executive director of the Oregon Community College Association.

ODOC was already experiencing a projected budget shortfall of $110 million before the pandemic, Peters wrote, which has resulted in $25 million in layoffs and other cost-cutting measures.

Peters said that DOC staff met with Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario to discuss the idea of the six colleges working together to create a proposal standardizing services.

“Treasure Valley was clear that such a proposal would not be forthcoming,” Peters wrote. “It was stated unequivocally during those meetings that the colleges are independent institutions and that the dynamics between colleges would not result in a unified proposal.”

DOC has now presented the community college association with requirements in order to continue the relationship. Those requirements include standardizing education programming hours across institutions,

Student lawsuit over Fordham dismissal alleges university ties to Chinese Communist Party: report

A New York college student who was threatened with expulsion over two social media posts has sued the school and his lawyer is now alleging it may have tried to hide ties to the Chinese Communist Party, according to legal documents.

Fordham University threatened to expel Austin Tong, a Chinese-born senior, for two social media posts from June. In a written response to Fordham’s motion to dismiss his suit, Tong’s lawyer, Edward Paltzik, alleged that Fordham has ties to the Chinese Communist Party, and that university officials have been “extraordinarily dishonest” in disclosing their dealings with the foreign nation.

During an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” Tong said he believed the university took issue “with anything they disagree with and they want to silence any voice they don’t like and that’s really what happened and they silenced me because they don’t like what I said.”

One of Tong’s posts featured a photo of a former St. Louis police captain who was killed in a June riot, with the comment, “Y’all a bunch of hypocrites.” A second post depicted Mr. Tong holding an unloaded rifle and the phrase “Don’t tread on me” – a reference to the Tiananmen Square massacre.

The second post is the one that ultimately led to the university’s threat to expel him. Fordham’s letter to Tong on June 8 informed him that he was guilty of violating university policies on “bias and/or hate crimes” and “threats/intimidation.”

Fordham requested an apology for the posts, but Tong responded with the lawsuit.

Paltzik’s argument regarding alleged ties to China’s Communist Party appears to be based on a letter from the Department of Education that informed Fordham it was seeking information on a possible discrepancy in
