Gay posted six tackles (five solo) and a sack in Sunday’s 40-32 loss to the Raiders.
Gay played just 15 defensive snaps through the first three weeks, but the rookie second-rounder is getting comfortable at the NFL level and is receiving more work as a result. He logged a season-high 47 percent snap share Sunday and capitalized with his first career sack. Gay’s usage stands to rise even more after that performance, so he could carve out fantasy utility in the near future.
Pennel collected a career-best 10 tackles (five solo) Monday versus the Patriots.
Pennel saw a significant bump toa 61 percent snap percentage share on defense Monday with Chris Jones (groin) sidelined and took advantage of the opportunity with a massive tackle total. While he’s not the pass-rushing threat that Jones is, Pennel could be in line for a hefty snap count again next week if Jones remains unavailable.
A rookie for the Kansas City Chiefs has received the first start of his career against the New England Patriots tonight.
Rookie LB Willie Gay Jr., selected with pick No. 63 in the 2020 NFL Draft, received his first career start. He had only played 15 defensive snaps through the first three games to the season. Most of his snaps on special teams and he recorded his most impactful play in Week 2 against the Chargers with a tipped punt. By Week 4, Gay has earned his first opportunity to start in Kansas City and it’s not due to injuries or anything like that.
While Gay has just two total tackles in the first three games of the season, his impact hasn’t been seen on the stat sheet. He’s provided speed on the coverage units and he’s been mostly sound in his defensive snaps. He had a solid run blitz against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.
Rookie LB Willie Gay made his first career start in tonight’s game.
Gay adds a much-needed infusion of athleticism and speed at the linebacker position for Kansas City. Their linebackers have struggled in coverage and on the ground. Gay, of course, ran a 4.46 at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine and carries the nickname “Turbo” for how quickly he plays in practice.
His start comes at a time when the Chiefs are set to face a Patriots team that likes to throw the ball to their running backs and tight ends. They’ll do so even more with backup QB Brian Hoyer under center.
It appears that Gay has taken over at the SAM linebacker position, while Damien Wilson has shifted over to the WILL spot in place of Ben Niemann.
Niemann tallied two tackles (both solo), including his first career sack Monday versus the Ravens.
Niemann continues to rotate in among a deep group of linebackers for the Chiefs, playing 43 percent of the snaps in Monday’s contest. While it produced his first career sack, Niemann also saw a downturn in defensive snap percentage and just two tackles after racking up nine a week ago. He doesn’t see the field enough at the moment to warrant IDP consideration in most formats.
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has added yet another achievement to his ever-growing list of career accolades. Back in November of 2019, he became the fastest player to reach 8,000 career passing yards and 65 career touchdowns. This time he’s passed two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in another pace, stamping his name in the NFL history books.
As if a “Monday Night Football” contest between the reigning Super Bowl MVP and the league MVP wasn’t exciting enough, Mahomes had to go and make some NFL history. Throwing for just 75 yards against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, Mahomes has become the fastest player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career passing yards.
Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season marks the 34th career game for Mahomes, dating back to when he received his first start back in the final week of the 2017 NFL season. Mahomes reached 10,000 yards a whole two games quicker than the previous record-holder, St. Louis Rams HOF QB Kurt Warner. Mahomes also passes others in the top five, such as Matthew Stafford (37), Marc Bulger (38), Andrew Luck (38), and Dan Marino (38).
With that completion to TE Travis Kelce, QB Patrick Mahomes is now over 10,000 passing yards in his first 34 career starts, making him the fastest QB to cross the 10,000 yard mark.
This is going to be a tough record for others to beat in the coming years. Mahomes has averaged just over 300 passing yards per game in the first two seasons of his career. He 318.6 passing yards per game in 2018 is good for the No. 12 performance in NFL history. This type of production at this pace isn’t easily achieved, even with the NFL’s shift toward pass-heavy offenses.
